According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, immunotherapy is primarily used by patients who suffer from severe allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, or life-threatening insect sting allergies that don't respond adequately to medications or avoidance measures. The treatment involves two phases: a build-up phase where allergen doses are gradually increased over 3-6 months, followed by a maintenance phase lasting 3-5 years with regular injections or sublingual tablets.
Healthcare providers typically recommend immunotherapy for patients who meet specific criteria. Candidates include individuals with confirmed IgE-mediated allergies through skin or blood testing, those whose symptoms significantly impact quality of life despite proper medication use, people who experience severe side effects from allergy medications, and patients who prefer long-term treatment over daily symptom management. Children as young as 5 years old may be candidates, though the decision requires careful evaluation of their ability to communicate adverse reactions.
The treatment is particularly effective for environmental allergens such as tree, grass, and weed pollens, dust mites, mold spores, and animal dander. Many patients can reduce or eliminate their need for allergy medications after completing the full course of treatment.
