According to clinical research, effective melatonin dosages vary by age and condition:

  • Adults: 0.5-5mg taken 30-60 minutes before bedtime
  • Children: 0.5-3mg under medical supervision only
  • Elderly: Starting with 0.3mg and gradually increasing if needed

It’s recommended to start with the lowest effective dose (0.5-1mg) and increase gradually if needed. Higher doses don’t necessarily mean better results – some studies suggest that doses above 5mg may be less effective and could cause side effects like grogginess. For jet lag, research suggests taking 0.5-5mg at local bedtime for up to 4 days after travel.
